The Stockman's Story

In 1897, the story of Stockmans Crib began.

It's inherent charm will draw you to another time, beautifully curated with objects from the stockman's journey and the sea, as he tolled away loading wool bales on the sailing ships and tending to his master's flock. Stockmans Crib was his sanctuary from a day's work.

It's still a story to be written by you.

History

In 1897, George and Kathleen Doust and their 12 children built Stockmans Crib. At the time, there were three houses built on this block with a well between the houses.

George worked as a stockman for a local pioneering family, the Dempsters, whose beautiful homestead still stands today and has been lovingly restored just up the road on the back paddock.

Around the corner block, the Dempsters had a beautiful old shearing shed which unfortunately no longer stands, now a caravan park. Out the front is the port where the Dempsters had their own jetty. George was instrumental in loading the ships with the wool bales directly from the woolshed.

George also worked at the stockyards which were located near the Bijou Theatre which is still lovingly used by the community and is the oldest surviving theatre in the state. This was all within five minutes walk from home, which is now Stockmans Crib.

Owner, Sonia, has endeavoured to honour the history of the humble worker's cottage, forever a sanctuary from the toils of work and life. A place to be replenished, nourished and to share with family and friends. Come rest awhile so you to can be restored to carry on life’s journey.
